Introduction
Detectica is a New York-based startup that helps organizations integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions into their overall business strategy. Founded by world-renowned industry experts and academics, Detectica helps companies develop tailored strategies to invest in and make the most of technologies such as AI, machine learning, and data science.
The Product
Detectica’s bespoke AI and data-driven solutions analyze evidence from across the organization’s data sources and present them in a single view. This helps eliminate the need for data analysts to create complicated spreadsheets and manually gather data from multiple departments. The solution assists analysts by ‘learning’ constantly from existing data which enables it to conduct smarter and more accurate surveillance of data movements within the organization.
The AI-driven systems initiate investigations of internal systems based on internal and external trigger alerts, and then enhances its methods of supervised person monitoring and compliance monitoring. Further, the system elaborates on the aspects of each case with context and related evidence, assigns a score to the case, and provides the key evidential support for it. Following this, the system observes and aids investigators in processing the specific case, and emails the review requirements to the relevant actors.
Detectica’s proprietary models scan various forms of data including emails, chats, and employee information to generate a feed of cases for analysts to review. It stacks the cases according to their priority and allows users to customize the thresholds for determining the priority of each case to align with the organization’s compliance requirements.
Furthermore, the team leverages its decades of experience with enterprises and startups from across industries such as finance, telecommunications, technology, advertising, and others, to help firms with creating their bespoke AI and data science strategies. The company helps develop pilot projects for clients to review the impact of any new system before going ahead with a full-fledged investment in a piece of technology. The team analyzes the outcomes from such systems and makes relevant modifications to build an end-product that meets the organization’s business requirements.
Origin and Founding Team
Detectica was founded by Dr. Foster Provost, Dr. Panos Ipeirotis, and Dr. Josh Attenberg.
Dr. Provost is Professor of Data Science, Andre Meyer Faculty Fellow and the Director of the Fubon Data Analytics & AI Center. Dr. Ipeirotis is a Professor and George A. Kellner Faculty Fellow at the Department of Technology, Operations and Statistics. Josh Attenberg holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from New York University, with a focus on applications of machine learning. He is an Adjunct Professor at the NYU Stern School of Business, where he teaches data science, data mining, and machine learning.
Foster, Josh, and Panos have spent over a decade working together on developing systems that integrate human intelligence and AI/ML, for organizations across various industries and sizes. Most notably, the trio designed and built the founding data science architecture for Integral Ad Science, originally founded as AdSafe Media. One of the key problems their architecture helped Integral Ad Science with was scouring the web to identify web pages containing objectionable content like hate speech, and blocking ads from appearing there.
Performance and Trends
Post the publication of this article, Detectica has been acquired by real estate brokerage firm Compass In November 2019. The three co-founders will work with Compass in helping the company accelerate its efforts towards leveraging AI-powered features on its platform for better customer experiences.
